When we moved my mother-in-law into our home a lot changed. One of my favorite changes is afternoon coffee. Every day around 2pm grandma rises from a nap and begins fussing about the kitchen to find a snack and get a cup of coffee. A few times since she’s moved in she has told me about her family in Vietnam and how they continuously drank coffee. “We were coffee people” she would say as she described the daily routine of 3-4 different coffee sessions. One day, grandma looked at me while we were both making some afternoon coffee and said “we are coffee people” and smiled. This is a memory that will stick with me forever.
Grandma is not a very discerning coffee drinker. Her favorite is “hazelnut” – a Tassimo Swiss Hazelnut cartridge. But if there is leftover from the morning; she’ll drink that instead to avoid waste. The morning coffee was my preference – Kirkland Medium Roast Ground from a Mr Coffee machine. This is where my journey begins. I’ll be exploring the many roasters of Richmond while trying to evolve my own taste for coffee and I hope my experience entertains or enlightens others in the area.
